Do I need call tracking or analytics on my trade business website?
At minimum, yes — you should know how many people visit your site and how many actually submit a form or click to call. Beyond that, how much tracking you need depends on whether you're running paid ads.
The baseline every trade site should have:
- Basic analytics (GA4 or a simpler alternative) showing traffic volume and where it's coming from
- Form submission tracking, so you know your quote form is actually working and how often it's used
- Google Search Console, which shows what people search before they land on your site
Call tracking — a dedicated phone number that logs and sometimes records calls — earns its keep once you're spending money on Google or Facebook ads and need to know which channel is actually driving the phone to ring. Without paid traffic to attribute, it's often more complexity than it's worth for a one-truck or two-truck operation.
Skip the enterprise-grade analytics dashboards built for e-commerce. You don't need heatmaps and funnel software to run a trades business — you need to know: are people finding me, and are they contacting me. Everything past that is optional until you're scaling ad spend.
