Can I write my own website copy, or should I hire a writer?
You can absolutely write your own copy if you know your trade and your customers — and honestly, that authenticity often beats generic copywriter fluff about "quality workmanship you can trust." Nobody trusts that line anymore because every site says it.
Where DIY copy goes wrong:
- Long, rambling paragraphs with no clear point — people scan, they don't read
- No obvious next step — every page needs a clear call to action, not just information
- Missing the specific words customers actually search — your service and your service area, stated plainly
- Copy-pasting the same paragraph across every service page — Google notices, and so do readers
A writer earns their fee if you don't have the time, if English isn't your strongest skill, or if you need a dozen service and location pages written to a consistent SEO structure — that's tedious, repetitive work that's easy to get wrong at scale.
A good middle ground: you provide bullet-point notes on what makes your business different and answer a few questions, and a writer shapes that into clean, scannable pages. Bad copy costs you more in lost leads than a writer costs to hire.
