What domain name should I pick for my trade business?
Use your business name as a .com if it's available. That's it — that's the whole strategy for most trades businesses. Simple, memorable, easy to say over the phone, and it matches your trucks, your invoices, and your Google Business Profile.
What to avoid:
- Keyword-stuffed domains like "best-plumber-cityname.com" — Google stopped rewarding exact-match domains years ago, and it reads as spammy to real customers
- Hyphens and numbers, which are easy to mistype and hard to say out loud
- A domain that doesn't match your actual business name — it breaks the trust chain between your truck, your reviews, and your site
If your exact business name is taken as a .com, add your city or a short, natural word — "smithplumbingco.com" or "smithplumbinghi.com" — rather than reaching for a random string or an odd extension. Buy the .com even if you plan to primarily promote a different one.
However you register it, make sure the domain is locked to an account you personally control — not your web designer's account. That's the single most common way business owners end up unable to move or update their own site later.
